When to apply Yoga therapy?

Can Yoga therapy compete/equal or even outperform the Ayurvedic treatments? When to decide for which? Can yoga alone do the work, provided that in many places across the world ayurvedic healing modalities are inaccessible? Under yoga therapy, I refer to a diseased person adopting a lifestyle with vegetarian diet, practice of asana, pranayama, shatkarma, mantra, meditation under the guidance of an experienced professional.

Yoga sastra is a complete yogic science for harmony of body, mind, intellect, sense organ & spirit. Shad karmas are parallel to Panchakarma (Sodhana) in Ayurveda, where as Asanas & Pranayama can perform like Samana (cleansing) techniques.

A Yogi is supposed to practice Asana, Pranayam, Mudra, Bandha etc in the prescribed manner daily to keep the body, mind, intellect, sense organ & spirit cleaned or balanced. Being body is made of 5 elements predominantly Prithvi & Ap, has got always the tendency of accumulating Mucus or vitiated Kapha, hence Shard Karmas (6 purificatory sodhana techniques) are essential and advised to practice at least once in a month. This will keep the body clean from time to time impurities.

In today's world, where people are not practicing Yoga daily or practices only 2 or 3 times a week, are more prone to accumulate toxins in the body and require more intense cleansing techniques. The origin of spread of Ayurveda practice as explained in Charaka Samhita, Great Sages gathered in the mountains of Himalayas as diseases were the reasons to cause obstructions in their daily life. Even they had to go with medicines!, being the diseases were chronic.

It will be definitely can give better results, provided how it is being administered compared to restricted Ayurveda practice in the west. Or with Ayurveda & Yoga together can do even wonders.

The result may wary upon the condition or how chronic the disease is.

Yoga therapy can be administered in all conditions. The practice of postures doesn't mean to bend or twist like a spring! but the way breathing is taken, the way the movement is done - are more important. relaxation & Meditation are equally important. Many times people asks how much time we are supposed to do it! Actually each and every breathing & movement in Yoga practice has to be with FULL meditation & relaxation. It is not to be practiced like Jim or treadmill exercises watching TV, saying I can do many things at a time.

Flexibility is the result of the practice, which means the purity of the body. So each movement & breathing in Yoga therapy are very important. Everything leads to cure, like all the rays from the Sun!
